With Vinylmation collectors being able to pick up their RSP items early at the Registration event, thanks to Vinylmation Exchange member Sarah Texter, we now know that the Popcorn Beast variant is a golden version. Which ties directly into the theme of the event as an awards show.

One of the most interesting developments within Vinylmation was the unveiling of the Popcorns brand, stepping away from the standard Mickey Mold was a bold step and while many Vinylmation fans weren’t impressed, there were many who embraced the new Vinylmation shape and these figures appealed to other Urban Vinyl collectors and casual Disney customers who just liked the figures.

But the Popcorns line has been a rocky one, the initial run of open window figures seemed to get off to a great start but quickly it looked as if many of the figures were collecting dust on the shelves at the Disney parks and before long the whole series was devalued with the shocking decision to drop the price to $5 a piece for a Black Friday Cyber Sale. Many collectors jumped on the chance to grab a bargain (I myself picked up the last 4 I needed to complete the set) but after that, once the price shot back up to full price. Popcorns series 1 was already deemed a failure and nothing more than Outlet Fodder. Popcorns Series were just over priced and over produced, much like most of the Vinylmations created in 2012. The variant editions also suffered from over production, the black and white Mickey Mouse was LE5000 which was way too high and the Dumbo Circus variant was also over produced at LE2500.

VMBlog_20120627_Popcorns01Popcorns Series 2 followed the next year with just 4 designs along with 2 variants (Black & White Donald and Reflections of Evil Sulley) which had some success but with a rather interesting take on Ursula! Once again, these figures have stuck around on shelves for too long and ended up at the Outlets.

mysterypopcornsDisney haven’t given up on the Popcorns line, Series 3 will follow this year with a new “Mystery” element and Beast will be one of the figures available at this years Imagination Gala. But as of yet, we know very little about the Mystery Popcorns line.

Popcorns have the potential to be a fantastic Vinyl art line, the demand for Vinyl art is still there and different takes on classic Disney characters is what people want, currently Funko Pop Vinyls and Funko’s Mystery Mini’s are huge due to lots of different reasons such as including ease of access due to different retailers carrying them and great designs. Popcorns could be a great line but some changes have to be made and looking at the Funko Mystery Mini’s is the way to go.

My first suggestion would be to take at look at the price, at $25 or $20 a piece, is simply too high for a common figure, Vinylmation has slowly tried increasing its price over time but most items stay around the $13 price tag which is also around the same price as a Funko Pop Vinyl. And one way of decreasing the price would be to make the size of the figures smaller, Popcorns vary hugely in size, comparing Sulley to Chip/Dale is like comparing a 9” to a Junior. And if Popcorns went even smaller to the similar size to the Funko Mystery Mini’s that could also push sales even further.

Disney have had a huge success in turning the Vinylmation hobby around with the use of their Eachez by including the chance of a variant has made success stories out of many designs that might not have been as popular without the blind box element. And that variant factor is being introduced into the next Popcorns series which could be a major step forward for the brand, but mixing in smaller figures with a lower price point could be the difference maker in turning Popcorns into a major success.

What do you think could save the Popcorns line?

RogPalmerUK – I love the Popcorn series, I think its something fresh and unique to Vinylmation, I am long past the issue of only being on the Mickey Mold, different shapes and different takes on Disney characters are exactly what I’m interested in.  Popcorns for me is one of those series I just want to buy, I think they are fun and exciting, with Donald Duck (both versions) and Stitch really standing out as strong figures that I have added to my shopping list for my next trip to Walt Disney World.   These three figures will all be coming home in my luggage.  The Angry Sulley from the Villains 13 event is also the only figure from the event that I actually want and I can’t wait to add that to my collection.  It’s been over a year since we saw Stitch and Sparky at last years Mickey’s Circus, so it’ll be interesting to see if Popcorns return for a third series.

WDWRobert – I am glad to see a second series of the “Popcorns” Vinylmations. I must say I love Sparky. What a great figure that fits so well into the Popcorn style molds. I love the Rainbows of Gray Scale Colors that have been used to complete him. I love his one! Donald is another one I really like. I love the Classic Black and White Variant Donald and Love the one in color. This mold was used with Chernabog and that was a disaster. Donald looks much better on it! Stitch, though not one of my favorite Character looks great in this form. Though not a Popcorn Series one (AT least I don’t think it is) Angry Sully looks completely terrorizing in his Roaring appearance. Great job!

Baltar – Popcorns are bizarre offbeat renditions of Disney characters. Sometimes they work. Sometimes they don’t. Stitch is a perfect example of a winner. His ears are perfect and his expression cracks me up. This should be a must have for Popcorns lovers and Stitch fans.

Joshua Jackson – First off I must saw when Disney first announced the Popcorns line I was a little skeptical about this mold change but once I saw them in person I immediately feel in love and bought them all and cousin wait for series two. Now that is aha come around I am very glad to see Stitch was out in the set, he is my favorite Disney character so when I saw him I knew it was a must! My other hits are Donald, he’s so cute and I love the variant, and my last hit would be Sparky, I just love how cute he is!

Travis D – Donald- I love the expression, and the B/W variant is pretty sweet. Cannot wait to pair him up with the B/W Mickey from Series 1.

Stitch: Anything Stitch is awesome. End of story.

Scarer Sulley: Technically a variant from Series 1, but this Reflections of Evil exclusive vinyl is pretty awesome looking. Only down side? Was Sulley ever a villain?

Misses

RogPalmerUK – The Popcorn series got off on the wrong foot and they have made some adjustments to try to fix this brand, dropping the price by $5 is a good start and trying to keep down the production run is probably a wise decision as that Thanksgiving $5 Fire Sale damaged these figures for the rest of the year.  Popcorns is a niche Vinyl collectible that needed to be protected a little in my view and I think having a small run of figures for their second outing is exactly what was needed.

However I think who ever green lit the Ursula had to have had an eye infection that day, seriously what on earth is going on with Ursula looking like a big pile of pooh.. This is without doubt probably the worst figure I have ever seen, I even mentioned it to my wife about how bad I thought it look and she just laughed when she saw it.  I’m also going to mention Sparky here, I haven’t seen Frankenweenie yet (I just brought the DVD this past week while it was on sale), so until I’ve seen the movie it’s a miss, so this one is slap bang in the middle for me at the moment.

Joshua Jackson -First and for most I want to stress that Ursula is one of my favorite Disney villains, anything that’s related to her I must have except for the popcorn. When I first heard about her making on a popcorn form I was super excited! I couldn’t wait I pick her up from D Street but the moment I saw her I was disgusted. What the heck was the artist thinking? She is the worst and most ugly popcorn I have ever seen! This was a complete and totally HUGE epic FAIL in Disney’s part!

WDWRobert – Ursula. Not much to say here. I don’t quite like the Tentacles looking so round. Round enough for me to think she is driving on a “Little Rascal”. Or her Hersey Kiss head. There is not much that I like about it. Price was another miss. $24.95 were too much and $19.95 is still too much.

Travis D – Ursula: I mean… just look at her. Nothing is right about this vinyl. Looks like someone is trying to shrink her head (Trader Sam, I’m looking at you!) Sparky: Kind of like Pluto did in Series 1, this dog looks a little too “derpy” to me…. derp derp derp.

Baltar – Now let’s talk about Ursula. Oh Ursula what happened to you sweetie? Whoever approved this mold was in a hurry to get out of work one day. We’ve never even had a Popcorns with a mold shaped like this so WHY choose a character with a monstrous head and make it pointy? Ursula’s hair is just as important to her character as her voluptuous body. If they could go back and change this mold, I’d buy it for sure. Alas, it’s not happening.
