Welcome to a brand new edition of Hits and Misses as members of the Vinylmation Kingdom give us their thoughts on a series and this week we take a look at Oz – The Great and Powerful
RogPalmerUK – My wife is a huge Wizard of Oz fan and thus I have seen the movie a few times and thought it was ok but when we went to see Wicked on the West End in London, I really enjoyed it and the story. So I am looking forward to seeing the new movie but with the cost of the cinema nowadays, I’ll have to wait until its out to rent before I get to see it (however my wife has now told me she wants to see it at the Cinema!). Remakes, sequels and prequels have become the norm, so classic’s are constantly being revamped for the modern audience but the characters remain the same, so this set has some very well known characters. But this movie reminds me a little of John Carter with too much hype that it can’t live up to and the vinyl’s seem to suffer from the same problems as Human’s don’t transfer to the Mickey mold too easily. Which is why my favourites from these sets are the less Human characters like the Baboon Junior which just looks fantastic. The Wicked Witch is probably the strongest 3”, probably because I remember Wicked being so amazing, but it does look a little too much like the Holiday vinyl. And the fact that are available in the UK, makes them much more appealing.
Disneycollector -Oz The Great and Powerful is interesting. Honestly, it’s giving me Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland vibes (which I hated), and after Spiderman 3 (Emo Peter, the dance scene, and little Venom were enough for me to hate it), I don’t know how good this will be. Regardless, let’s take a look at these sets. My first hit is without a doubt The Wicked Witch of the West and the flying monkey combo. Just, wow. This is how you do a combo. Second hit is Glenda and the doll. The combo looks beautiful, especially Glenda’s tiara.
Imagination-Parade – I am a big Wizard of Oz fan. I’m really looking forward to this movie, and I even liked what I saw of the art for these vinyls when it first came out. However, looking at the results now, I’m not as excited about the vinyls as I was originally. That being said, my biggest 3″ hit goes to the Wizard himself. Good facial expression, good accessory, and I like the emerald green ears. Of the four, I’m most likely to purchase his set. The Wicked Witch also has a great facial expression, though her hat is distracting me, as it almost looks too small for her. All of the Jr. companions have really nice detail work on them. Finley (the monkey) is my favorite, though I think he could’ve made a great 3″ with accessory wings!
RogPalmerUK -These sets don’t shout to me “Buy me” for a few reasons, obviously having not seen the movie means I have a instant cloud hanging over the series but these vinyls just don’t blow me away. Human’s just don’t seem to work as well and I look at these sets thinking, if they packaged the whole set like the recent Cinderella set it might have worked better as these 3” & Junior sets look over priced. Which is probably why I think these will probably end up going discounted at some point, especially if the movie doesn’t do as well as expected. A bit like the recent Fantasia sets, I’m not sure not they work with lots of them and for me the entire series just comes across as a miss.
Disneycollector – Yep, I’m splitting them up two for two. I’m calling the other two equal. They aren’t bad, but they don’t stand out for me like the other two, especially the Wicked Witch combo.
Imagination-Parade – Glinda and Evanora are the big misses for me. I do like Glinda’s crown, but I wish her dress/body weren’t so plain. Evanora’s dress is better, but she definitely has the problematic chipmunk cheeks going on. These are two figures that maybe could have benefited from that new Minnie Mouse mold with the dress, and, while Glinda’s face is much better than Evanora’s, I don’t think either one particularly translate well onto the Vinylmation figure. If I were wanting to purchase something for either of these characters, I’d much rather spend my money on the gorgeous Disney Store dolls than these vinyls. Also, since these sets are a 3″ and a Jr. but are priced the same as many 3″ combo packs, the price is a miss for me as well.
