This Friday, Disney is releasing their second edition of the Toy Story vinylmation set. Although we’ve seen many different renditions of Toy Story in vinylmation form, that doesn’t diminish the excitement of hearing about a new Toy Story set. After all, it was Toy Story that introduced many of us to the beauty of computer animation and the exciting world that Pixar could create.

Despite the previous Toy Story series being a full case, we are treated to a smaller 7 common piece set this time around. Maybe it’s because we’ve seen so many Toy Story vinylmations, but the Ron Cohee and Maria Clapsis decided to show us our favorite characters outside of their typical appearance.

First we have Buzz Lightyear as Mrs. Nesbitt. This is the vinylmation that I am most excited about. Seen in Toy Story 1, this is the costume that Buzz put on when he finally realized he was just a toy and became slightly inebriated with grief and fake tea.  This common vinylmation would have made an awesome chaser in any other vinylmation set.

Next, we have Woody and Jesse as they appeared on Woody’s popular hit show, Woody’s Roundup. I think this is an interesting take on these characters. The black and white color scheme really adheres to the old school feel of a western film from the 1950’s. Another subtle thing that I appreciate about these two vinylmations were the lines drawn vertically from the corner of their mouths. This little detail makes Woody and Jesse appear as inanimate puppets rather than the live computer generated figures that we are used to seeing.

Then we have Dolly, a minor character that we met in Toy Story 3. She was one of the dolls “acting” when Bonnie first started playing with Woody. Dolly is best known for her humorous quip of, “Woody? You’re gonna stick with that? Well, now’s the time to change it, you know, new room and all. That’s coming from a doll named Dolly.” Another character from Bonnie’s toy collection is also represented in this vinylmation set. That character is Trixie. Trixie was the dinosaur who surprisingly knew how to use a computer and who hilariously received an instant message from her friend, “Velocistar237.”

Lastly, we see Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head. Outside of Buzz, Woody, and Jesse, Mr. Potato Head would be the next closest thing to a main character that we see in this vinylmation set. Although we hear Andy’s toys excited about Mrs. Potato Head at the end of Toy Story 1, we do not actually see her until Toy Story 2.  The thing that I like about these two vinylmations was the inclusion of Andy’s bedroom wallpaper on the ears of both figures.

What do you think? Are you excited for this set? Will this be a set to complete or a set that you will grab a figure or two from?

spidermand tray

spidermand trayEnding off what seems like the most expensive vinylmation month ever, this Friday we will see the release of the highly anticipated Marvel Series 2 Vinylmation set.  When Marvel Series 1 was released last year, many Marvel fans were upset about the inclusion of the Fantastic Four Spiderman and the omission of the classic blue and red Spiderman.  This caused many to speculate that the traditional Spiderman vinylmation was being saved for a Spiderman specific set.  A year later, we come to find out that these critics were correct.

There is something about Spiderman that has made this Marvel character a fan favorite since its inception in the comic entitled Amazing Fantasy , released in 1962.  Starting with the Tobey Maguire series in 2002 and up to the current Andrew Garfield series, we have seen 5 Spiderman movies in a little over a decade.  Hollywood knows we love Spiderman and they keep thinking of ways of rehashing this awesome story.

What is it about Spiderman that keeps fans wanting more? For me, it’s the story of the shy and nerdy boy turned wise cracking super hero that got me hooked.  No other mainstream super hero connected with me the way Spiderman did.  Sure Batman is awesome, but I wasn’t an orphan who inherited a fortune. Yeah Superman is practically unstoppable, but I wasn’t a man with the build of a NFL quarterback.  In high school, I was the scrawny bookworm who lived in the library.  Peter Parker was the hero I could relate to.

With this vinylmation set, Disney is maintaining their love for villains.  In the 11 piece set (12 if you include the unknown chaser), more than half of the vinylmations consists of villains.  Representing the good side, we have 4 characters:  Spiderman, JJ Jameson, Black Cat, and Mary Jane.  Representing the villains, we have 7 characters: Mysterio, Kraven the Hunter, Electro, The Lizard, Green Goblin, Rhino, and Venom.

What do you think?  Is this the set to buy?  Will it live up to the hype that Marvel Series 1 created?

villains 5

If you were not one of the lucky ones to get the SDCC exclusive Pixar Villains set, Disney is giving you a second chance to join the party with the release of the Villains 5 vinylmation set.  This collection will contain villains from at least 8 Pixar films.  Ranging from classics such as Finding Nemo to newer films like Monsters University, this set is bound to have at least one vinylmation that you will want to collect.

villains 5

Charles Muntz

Screen Shot 2014-08-16 at 5.07.16 PM

Charles Muntz is the hero turned villain in the movie Up.  This character was Carl’s childhood idol and the reason Carl and Ellie met.  If Muntz did not inspire Carl and Ellie to pursue adventure, they may have never found true love.  In the end, Muntz went mad with determination to capture Kevin, the creature people did not believe he captured.  In pursuit of Kevin, Muntz put the lives of Carl, Russell, and Dug.

Screen Shot 2014-08-16 at 5.10.15 PM

This is the vinylmation I am most excited for.  Although not a villain in a true sense, Darla was the character in Finding Nemo that Nemo and the other fishes inside the dentist office feared.  Known for loving animals but not knowing the proper way to take care of them, Darla was notorious for killing fishes while still in the plastic bag.

Screen Shot 2014-08-16 at 5.13.55 PM

Mor’du was the mythical and legendary foe of Merida’s father in the movie Brave.  Legend has it that Mor’du was an evil 12 foot tall black bear.  According to story repeatedly told by Fergus, Mor’du was the one responsible for his missing leg.

Screen Shot 2014-08-16 at 5.16.14 PM

This is the third iteration of Syndrome that we’ve seen this year.  We’ve seen him once as a Robot in Robots 4, again as Incrediboy in the SDCC exclusive, and now as his full on evil on evil self in Villains 5.  Seen in the movie The Incredibles, Syndrome was the die hard Mr. Incredible fan who became evil after feeling slighted as a young boy by Mr. Incredible.

Mr. Waternoose

Screen Shot 2014-08-16 at 5.17.56 PM

Mr. Waternoose is one of two Monsters Inc villains that we see in this series.  Seen in the original monsters movie, “Monsters, Inc”, Mr. Waternoose was the crab like creature who was the in charge of running the Monsters, Inc business.  His evil doings involved doing whatever it took to keep the business profitable.

Dean Hardscrabble

Screen Shot 2014-08-16 at 5.19.26 PM

Dean Heardscrabble was the dean in charge of Monser’s University.  Similar to Darla, Hardscrabble is not a villain a traditional sense.  She was not out to harm anyone nor did she seem to have a vendetta against Mike or Sully.  If anything, Dean Hardscrabble reminds me of my old college professors that were always about hard nosed and always about business.  Wait….I take it back then.  Dean Hardscrabble IS the ultimate villain.

Screen Shot 2014-08-16 at 4.35.19 PM

Bambi’s buddy is a villain now?  This Thumper is actually a from the movie A Bug’s Life.  This character is a great counterpart to the other SDCC exclusive released, Hopper.  In the movie, Thumper was Hopper’s muscle.  If Hopper wanted something done to an insect that got in his way, he would unleash Thumper on the poor victim.

Al McWhiggin

Screen Shot 2014-08-16 at 5.22.29 PM

Thanks to the lovely thing called the world wide web and ebay, we know that Al Mcwhiggin, better known as “The Chicken Man”, will be the chaser in this set.  In this set, Al will be dressed in his infamous chicken suit.  In the movie, Toy Story 2, Al is the evil garage saler- toy collector who stole Woody from Andy’s front lawn.  Fun fact: Al’s toy store actually made a quick cameo as a commercial on TV in the original Toy Story Movie.

What are your thoughts? Does this set interest you?  If it does, will you purchase the full set or will you just try to get the villain from your favorite Pixar film?

Watching Sleeping Beauty always takes me back to that special time period in Disney history.  A time when Disney movies had that certain artistic feel that computers nowadays can’t come close to generating. A time when Disney movies didn’t rely on 5-6 catchy tunes in order to keep their audience captivated.  A time when Disney protagonists acted like true princesses straight out of a classical children’s fairy tale. Although we will have to wait until October to see this film remastered and re-released once again, Disney is bringing the story back to life in the form of vinylmations. 20140728-090027-32427507.jpg

On July 28th, Disney surprised a lot of vinylmation collectors by releasing this set a couple days early. Prior to this release, there were many speculations and questions being asked in the vinylmation world: Who will be the chaser?  Who will be the variant?  Will this set be as sought after as the Beauty and the Beast set?  Now that we are a day into its release, most of these questions have been answered.  The chaser is Briar Rose.  The variant is Aurora wearing her blue dress.  But the last question?  That has yet to be answered.

Initially, there was plenty of buzz around the internet.  People were on edge to know who the chaser and variant will be.  Then, when the photos started to leak, many people seemed disappointed.  Some were upset that we were essentially “given the exact same Aurora three times in one set.”  These people cried foul and shouted, “Get ready to see these at the trade boxes!” or “I give it 6 weeks before they go on clearance!”

Yet, a good amount of people were claiming this set to be a huge success.  All the major characters present? Check.  Beautiful artwork? Check.  Nostalgic characters that touch the heart? Triple check. To these fans, this set will definitely be as treasured as the Beauty and the Beast set.

Opinions about this vinylmation set have changed more times than the color of Auroras dress during her ballroom dance.  In the end, as it is with every other set, you collect what you want, not what is deemed popular. Has this set won you over or will you hold out for something better?  Maybe Aurora knew the answer to this question when she sang, “If I know you, I know what you’ll do.  You’ll love me at once, the way you did once upon a dream.”

In what can be considered the biggest underdog release in vinylmation history, Disney is releasing the Vinylmation Duffy Series 1 this Friday.  This release is happening a day after the San Diego Comic-Con begins and a week before the Sleeping Beauty vinylmation set gets released.  As this set is being released, the vinylmation community may still be buzzing about the reveal of the Pixar Villains, Park 14, and the Animation 5 set.

Screen Shot 2014-07-22 at 10.03.40 PMUnbeknownst to many,  Duffy is Mickey Mouse’s toy bear.  Wait….Mickey carried around a teddy bear?  Starting in 2002, Disney began showing Mickey carrying around this fluffy toy bear. For those of you who have gone to Disneyland, you may recognize Duffy as the bear who has the photo booth outside of Ariel’s Grotto.  In the 3 years that I have been going to Disneyland regularly, I have never seen a line of more than 1 person waiting to take a picture with this bear.  The line for Dole Whip and turkey legs is usually longer.  Yet, Disney decided to create a vinylmation series on this character.

Pardon the lack of excitement and level of skepticism.  Maybe this set isn’t aimed for my generation.  Growing up, I never saw Mickey with a teddy bear. Maybe this set is meant for the newer generation of Disney fans; fans who have never known Mickey to be without his trusty and fluffy companion.  Or maybe this set is aimed for those who find teddy bears to be cute.  There is no denying that the bears in the set have a certain level of cuteness going for them.

What do you think?  With all the current excitement around other new releases and this weekends Comic-Con, does this set stand a chance or is it destined to share the same fate as the High School and Zooper Heroes sets?

We all know John Vignocchi, Executive Producer of Disney Infinity, can be very cryptic in regards to the future of Disney Infinity. Most of the time, his quips and banter I do not necessarily report about, because who knows what he means most of the time. However, just a few minutes ago, he tweeted this:

If you follow the link (click here for it) you will see that it is a story from Variety that Disney has acquired the rights for future Indiana Jones films from Paramount Pictures. Does that mean that we could see an Indiana Jones Play Set or character in the future? Who knows, but not having to deal with another company in regards to a movie tie-in Play Set is in their favor.

DTD - World of Disney Trade Box

DTD - World of Disney Trade Box

We have heard the rumours about the reduction of trade boxes at the Disney Theme Parks, but we have heard from visitors to Disneyland California Adventure park that this has become a reality as all trade boxes have been removed and only one remains at the Off the Page store.   And we expect the other parks to follow either today or tomorrow.

According to the internal memo and from discussion with cast members, the new trading rules and locations were set to start from the 1st of February  but it looks like the changes are already underway.  We will be continuing to be monitoring the situation and if you are visiting any of the parks, we would love to hear from you about the new trade rules/locations.

Vinylmation Exchange member Bryan Forsberg is running a campaign to try and save the trade boxes, he is dealing directly with managers at Disney and has managed to save the trade boxes at the resort hotels but still needs as much feedback from collectors as possible to show Disney why they should keep them.  So if you haven’t already done so, be sure to email him at

As a direct response from the removal of trade boxes, Vinylmation Traders founder OC VinylDon is bringing back “Trading in the Parks” Picnic events over in Disneyland California.  OC Vinyldon sent us the following:

“In light of the reduced Trading in the parks. Starting Sunday Februrary 17th “Trading in the Parks” is coming back to the Picnic area at DLR from 11-1. There after in it will be the 1st Sat and 3rd Sunday of each month. If you collect Vinylmations, Pins, Pop come on out meet with new friends , see old friends and lets make a trade.”

What are your reactions to the removal of all but one trade boxes from the parks?

Hello everyone and welcome to another Marvel Monday!! This week we will cover the various combo packs and nine inch vinyls that would go with Marvel Villains and Heroes Series 2! So without further ado it’s Marvel Monday!

3 inch Combo Pack

Mary_Jane_and_Gwen_Stacy_by_diablo2003 Spiderman’s Girlfriends: I thought a really cool and fun set would be both of Peter Parkers love interests; Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacy. While Mary Jane is known more as Peter Jacksons main love interest, Gwen Stacy was actually the first person who stole Peters heart until she met her untimely fate by the Green Goblin. Mary Jane is depicted as the beautiful red headed girl from next store. She is quick witted, sweet and tough. She knows that Peter Parker is Spiderman and serves as his primary love interest. Her vinyl would have her signature red hair covering most of her face with her green eyes shining through with a smile. Her body would have her in a black shirt and tan pants. Her ears would have hearts going out the right side. Gwen Stacy was Spidermans romance in most of his younger years and she loved him for his intellectual prowess. They both worked together in the lab and a romance quickly developed until she was met by her untimely demise. Her vinyl would be similar to Mary Janes except she would have blonde hair, blue eyes and the hearts would go out the left ear. I think it would be fun to make them very Betty and Veronica esque.

WOLVJUB001_DC11_LRWolverine and Jubilee: When Wolverine went to a small town in Australia, he was ambushed by the cyborg Reavers, who then crucified him. Jubilee helped him to escape and stayed by his side while he recovered from his ordeal, forming a close father-daughter bond. Wolverine then mentored Jubilee and helped her control her powers and stay connected with the world. It’s a great bond because Wolverine is usually a very tough character but being with the quirky Jubilee makes him care about the wellbeing of others and especially hers more because being a newer mutant she is somewhat unstable. Jubilee has the ability to project pyrotechnic energy plasmoids and concussive blasts while being able to evade the detection of telepaths. So with Jubilee’s stealth and Wolverines power they became a pretty unstoppable team. While we already have a Wolverine vinyl this one would be different, as it would have him in his signature white wife beater with blue jeans on and a cigar in his mouth. He would obviously still have the claws coming out of his hands. Jubilee’s vinyl would have her in her yellow and black coat with a happy smirk on her face. In her ears would be the colorful orbs of pyrotechnic energy that she controls.

9 inch and 3 inch combo pack

j_jonah_jamesonJ Jonah Jamenson and Daily Bugle covers: The 9 inch of these two series would be a man who is neither a hero nor a villain but just angry and I think he would be perfect for a huge vinyl especially with his big mouth. J. Jonah Jamenson is the editor in chief of the Daily Bugle, which is the primary newspaper for New York. He constantly writes outlandish stories but most of them involve Spiderman and how much he hates him admittedly because he is jealous of him. His vinyl would have him outfitted in his white collared shirt, suit pants and blue tie. His mouth would be wide open yelling with a cigar hanging out of it. His eyebrows slanted and eyes looking angry. His 3 inch vinyl would be covered in the various outlandish Daily Bugle headlines that he publishes outlawing Spiderman.
