wdw 2014 sorcerer

Recently I asked many collectors from Europe, how did they feel about 2014 with regards to collecting Vinylmation from their point of view.  So here is some feedback from many other UK & European collectors who collect differently to the local collectors near the theme parks.

wdw 2014 sorcererEmma I like a lot of what came out this year but really don’t like how most of them are only available in America. I mean the Disney store didn’t even get Animation 5 this time. That means if we in UK/Ireland want them not only do we have to pay high postage costs but most of the time we’ll have to pay more than cost price to get it from a US seller and just to prove what I was saying. Here’s an example from VT “just opened Baymax. $25 or trade…” Those vinyls cost 12.95. I understand some are more sought after than others but what chance have UK sellers got at collecting their favourite series if everyone charged twice the price. I know I couldn’t afford that.

AagyThis year has made me reconsider collecting Vinylmations. The lack of vinyls in store means we can’t blox. The hobby no longer gets me excited.   I purchase 1-2 vinyls I really like from America and don’t bother with the rest.  RIP bloxing in stores.  I think I will stick to growing a 9″ collection and only purchase 3″ figures I REALLY like.  The vinyls I want are always 2-4x retail because I don’t have a chance to blox and have to buy them individually instead. It sucks. This hobby is rather expensive for British collectors. I’m SO close to leaving this hobby in 2014. I know my bank balance will be healthy in 2015 if I do.

DamianThe last time I went into a Disney store in the UK( only a month ago) the employees didn’t even have a clue what I was talking about when I asked them if they sold Vinylmation. They looked at me with blank faces as if I was teaching them a new language,I then had to give them the beginners course as to what Vinyls are! I think Vinyls in the UK are what Dodos are to Australia…. EXTINCT.

JoPretty disappointed in the selection we were given on Disney.co.uk this year. We had hardley any!!!
I was glad we got Mickeys Christmas Carol, but with the few people buying we had hardly any Chasers going for trade/sale that we had to resort to buying
from the us!  Not that that is any way a bad thing as they are super helpful.  But how annoying is it,when we have hardly any & the us have every single release!  Disney please think of the UK collectors
.

StaceyIt’s definitely expensive as a UK collector if you want to collect most of the year’s releases. I only collect certain figures so I’ve found that for every overpriced figure on VE, there’s always great deals elsewhere that balance it back out. Overseas collectors willing to do pick-ups for cost plus postage are about as good as it gets for us!

The only problem I’ve really found this year is trading. Other UK collectors don’t have what you want because we haven’t had the releases, but overseas collects won’t trade because of postage costs. Thankfully as of now there’s only one 2015 release that I want!

CharlieI was lucky enough to get to WDW this year where I picked up a lot of releases I wanted… As unfortunately we never got them over here. I think the only set I bloxed here was sleeping beauty. There are a lot of releases out next year that I want but i will be really disappointed if we don’t get them.

As a UK, European or even just a collector away from the theme parks, how did you find 2014?

As the year comes to an end, many websites are doing their obligatory top ten lists.  Well, I thought it would be fun to make my personal top ten list of vinylmations released in 2014.  This is a list of the vinylmations that I personally considered must-haves for the year.  This year, we saw a handful of new vinylmations hit the market. There were times of complete silence, and there were times of waaaaayyyyy too many things coming out at the same time.  With all these selections, I have chosen my top ten favorite vinylmations released.

#10: R2D2 – Dagobah from Star Wars 4

Screen Shot 2014-12-19 at 9.07.50 PM

We have seen a handful of different R2D2s released, but this version caught my eye and stood out above the rest.  I love the dirt splattered all over the bottom of the vinylmation.

#9: Mail Pilot Mickey from Through the Years 1933 Set

Screen Shot 2014-12-19 at 9.08.17 PM

This vinylmation was part of a two vinylmation box set.  The other vinylmation in the set was the Brave Little Taylor vinylmation.  I feel that this Mail Pilot vinylmation made the set.  I am a huge fan of “UP” and this vinylmation reminds me of Carl as a member of the Adventurer Club.

#8: Haunted Mansion Mickey

Screen Shot 2014-12-19 at 9.06.50 PM

When this vinylmation was released, I was actually shocked that it wasn’t the chaser or at least a blind box item.  I am usually not a fan of box toppers, but this box topper was one that I did not mind getting duplicates of.  The smug look on Mickey’s face is just so different from the typical smiling Mickey that we are used to seeing.  Amazing!

#7: Rearranged Mickey from D-Tour Series 2

Screen Shot 2014-12-30 at 11.18.18 PM

This chaser caught me by surprise.  I absolutely love the creativity that Thomas Scott put into this vinylmation.  Definitely outside the box thinking with this beautiful design.

#6: Boba Fett from Star Wars 4

Screen Shot 2014-12-19 at 9.07.27 PM

Ok, I know I just mentioned that I wasn’t a big fan of toppers, but how can one not love this vinylmation?!?  This year, we have seen three Boba Fetts: this green one, a white one (also a topper), and the christmas Boba Fett.  In my opinion, this army green Boba Fett was the best released Boba Fett this year.

#5: Buzz Lightyear as Mrs. Nesbit from Toy Story Series 2

Screen Shot 2014-12-18 at 11.11.36 PM

There is so much awesomeness in this vinylmaiton, I think it probably should have been higher on my list.  From the detachable arm to the globe head, the details in this vinylmation were unreal.  The reason this vinylmation did not move higher in my list was because its form made it super easy for consumers to squish boxes and cherry pick for this chaser.  This left many vinylmation collectors upset about damaged boxes and unfair picks.

#4: SpiderMan from Marvel Series 2

Screen Shot 2014-12-18 at 11.12.00 PM

This was the Spiderman vinylmation we were all waiting for.  When Marvel series one was released last year, I was disappointed in the choice of the white costume Spiderman instead of this classic red and blue Spiderman.  I had a feeling that they were saving the classic Spiderman costume for an all Spiderman set.  Luckily, my inclination was correct and we were treated to this amazing vinylmation this year.

#3 Big Al in Chicken Suit from Villains Series 4

Screen Shot 2014-12-18 at 11.12.12 PM

Similar to the Buzz Lightyear vinylmation listed earlier, I love this vinylmation because of the creativity around the design.  Gerald Mendez could have just stuck with the basic Mickey Mouse template and covered Big Al with painted on feathers.  But he went above and beyond with this design by adding the comical and unique chicken mask on Big Al.  This chaser is actually one of the rare chasers that held up in value throughout the year.

#2: Iron Patriot from the Iron Man set

Screen Shot 2014-12-18 at 11.09.15 PM

This vinylmation was my hardest loss this year.  I tried to stay awake until midnight (pacific time) in order to get this set.  Unfortunately, I was super tired and woke up at 12:04.  When I tried to purchase this set, I was shocked to see that it sold out in less than 4 minutes.  Thankfully there are awesome people on Facebook who either traded or sold me their extra sets.  I now have Iron Patriot standing side by side with Iron Man from Marvel 1.  These two look beautiful side by side.

#1: Armored Baymax from Big Hero 6

Screen Shot 2014-12-18 at 11.08.58 PM

This vinylmation was my biggest chase of the year.  The Big Hero set seemed to only be on sale at local Disney Stores for a week.  Ok, I might be exaggerating, but it was one of the quickest vinylmations to disappear from Disney stores.  When this image was first previewed, I was not the biggest fan.  But once I watched Big Hero 6, I fell in love with Baymax and this vinylmation quickly became a must have.

Needless to say, this was an opinion based list.  Some of you may agree or disagree.  Please comment and let me know what you think of my list and what would be on your list!

2014

Its been an interesting year for Vinylmation collectors, there have been a lot of changes through 2014 and heading into 2015, the hobby feels a little different.

This time last year, I wrote a article looking back at 2013, many of the changes made in 2013 have continued, such as a reduction of 9″‘s (only a single 9″, a Star Wars figure from series 3), smaller case sizes, smaller edition sizes, less releases, etc.  All of those changes have resulted in a much stronger Vinylmation brand, there is much less available and new figures tend to sell out quicker.

Every now and again, Disney try to clear out some slower selling figure, the odd item heads to the outlets but they don’t spend too long there.  There are a few new items added but many of the open window figures are still the exact same ones as a year ago like the Pirates of the Caribbean and Mechanical Kingdom.   Disneystore.com hasn’t had to result to major “Madness” sales, leaving 2014, we only have just over 20 items available, down over 50% from the same time last year and compared to a few years ago with under 200 items, a lot has changed.

vinylmation_sleepingbeauty_dragondragonOne of the biggest changes in 2014 has been how Vinylmation has been treated by the physical Disney Stores, following the awful non-Disney series like Zooper Heroes, there have been extremely limited stock going to stores, with barely a handful of series being released in stores throughout 2014.  They have seen some releases such as Pixar Villains, Sleeping Beauty, Toy Story 2 and a few more items, the vast majority of new releases have dwindled.  This is probably for the best, as the constant new releases was burning many collectors out and many collectors couldn’t keep up, which is why so many figures were reduced, throughout 2014, this trend has continued, with less blind box series and more single figure releases.  However in doing so, many new releases have continued to push up retail prices, with most new single figure releases ranging from $13 to $17.

There can be little doubt that Vinylmation has returned to its Park roots, if you aren’t near D-Street, its become much harder to be a collector.  Lower Limited Edition sizes mean faster sell outs and online customers have often been left out in the cold with sell outs in minutes.  Even at the parks, there seems to be much less figures available and the reduction of trade boxes in 2013, has resulted in less presence at the parks.

Then we have seen the rise of the Eachez, Disney said they wanted to bring back the thrill of the chase and variants have been a dominating force throughout 2014.  The Trading Night Eachez have been hot items with super low edition sizes and only being available at one location, have created a frenzy for every release.  There hasn’t been this much excitement around a new release for years.  The Trading Night Eachez were a incredible success, though the lack of actual Trade Nights, made many local collectors unhappy.

vyn-trading-night-2014The lack of Trade Nights isn’t the only thing lacking in 2014, Disney as a whole has been paying much less attention to Vinylmation.  Throughout the year, Disney seem to be making less effort in promoting Vinylmation, New Release information has dried up, where we had new 360 images and information, weeks or months in advance, Disney now issue a single post with a months release.  For months, we wouldn’t know about a new release until the day it appear on the website or someone was tipped off at D-Street that it would be out that week.

And its not just the new release information that dried up, Disney haven’t touched their Vinylmation social media accounts in months and its pretty easy to see that Vinylmation just isn’t viewed as something worth advertising.  Maybe as Disney have returned Vinylmation to the parks, they don’t want to advertise them or see the need to.

The Disney Store has always been bad for promotion of new series, we often wouldn’t know about them in advance, but the Park team used to keep people in the loop better, but that has stopped.  Often we would learn about new Vinylmations from the Disney artists like Enrique Pita, Nacho or Gerald Mendez but we haven’t seen very much from these guys either.  This could be because the Disney Store aren’t making any or many new figures, but its very noticeable that many of the talented artists involved with Disney haven’t been seen to be as into Vinylmations as they once were.

MissMindy1And they aren’t the only artists who seem to be spending less time working with Vinylmation, many of the “Disney” custom artists seem to be doing less work on the mold, guys like John Henselmeier, Javier Soto and Noah have had barely involvement with Vinylmation.  Miss Mindy has continued to release new custom Vinylmations through the year and next year has her own series, but overall, many of the official custom artists have gone rather quiet in 2014, other than for some odd bits for the Imagination Gala.   Is this because high end customs weren’t selling?

Non-Official custom artists have been able to fill in the gap, with many artists selling their own blind box series and selling out, however many of them have been also been working on other platforms like Funko Pops and Disney Infinity items.

vinylmation trends decVinylmation has gone through many changes throughout the years and I believe 2014 has been one of retraction, looking at some statistics from Google, there is a lot less interest in Vinylmation than in previous years.

Disney took steps to make Vinylmation more profitable, but in doing so, it feels like it has gone into a smaller niche.

Many would argue the increase in variants has created more issues, especially greed, things sell out quickly because of the valuable variants but in general, most figures lose value quickly. Older figures haven’t held their value as collectors often only want the newest release or rare figure.  Trading as a whole has gotten harder and with a influx of people selling parts or all of their collection, Vinylmation prices have suffered.

MarvelMysteryMini

Many collectors have slowed down what they collect, trimmed their collections and many have lost interest.  With so many other “vinyl” alternatives out there, Vinylmation has lots of competition, even within its own company such as Disney Pops, Infinity, Mystery Mini’s and other brands.

Going into 2015, Vinylmation isn’t in the same place as how it came into 2014, its trimmed some fat from around the edges and is going forward with what looks to be a similar strategy from last year, but I want to know, what do you think of 2014 and the overall state of Vinylmation?

10847904_732265123526063_6469566695059828551_n

10847904_732265123526063_6469566695059828551_nAs we get closer to the end of 2014, I wanted to get some feedback from the Vinylmation Kingdom readers about their thoughts on the year as a whole, what they like and don’t like about collecting Vinylmation.  Here are some of their answers:

WillI’m also one of the ones that got burnt out by all of the releases. That coupled with the fact that you can’t get anything new online unless you buy right at 12:01 has turned me off of collecting. I only buy the select few I really want nowadays. I haven’t bought a set since the HM series and don’t plan to anytime soon.

JordanI’m definitely not turned off to collecting, but my goal of completing all of these sets I want is almost impossible considering they put out way too many sets and as others have said before, if you don’t go on immediately to get them, then the scalpers get them all.

EmmaLargely I like what came out but find it disappointing they’re not sold all over the world instead of just America for the most part also hugely disappointed that Lilo and Scrump didn’t come out in November as advertised!

Crystal – 2014 was the year I began collecting Vinylmation. I started when the Jungle Book series was new on the shelves. It seemed that when I began, the attitude of collectors was that the hobby was on the way out. Too many unwanted series, too much discounted product in the stores, the value was plummeting, and nothing good enough was coming out to make up for it. 9″ were a thing of the past, and had been insanely overpriced. People were taking advantage of trade boxes and turning in crap like urban redux and medieval. And then no releases. For months it seemed.

And then near the end of the year, after the imagination gala, we got hope. Christmas Carol. The Miss Mindy designer series. Monthly eachez release. No more urban! And no more trade nights. Peter Pan. Cinderella… So much to look forward to in 2015…

We had some beautiful figures this year (al in chicken suit, miss Nesbit buzz) and some duds (toy story 2 chaser). But I know since Disney is producing less junk series and focuses on artists and classic Disney, we all hope for a better 2015.

AlexGood: Trading night Vinylmation were the best part of Vinylmation and Eachez boxes this year. Bad: Lots of vinyls only in Disney Parks in USA and no DLP or other parks.

BJI’m primarily in it for Marvel and a few others, so it was very, very disappointing that Marvel 2 was only in parks

Konradi like eachez and trading in the parks. but the drudge of 2012/2013 pretty much pushed me from the hobby. I’ll pick up the occasional box and trade in the park.

BradIt was great for a couple years but they started putting out too much and it burnt itself out for me. I still like to look at them but never buy them.

How do you think 2014 was for Vinylmation collectors?

This week we have an amazing story by a trader on Vinylmation Trading UK.

A fellow user had helped someone to try and find a Frozen Elsa Dress. They were appreciated it so much, they sent the user a Park Seven Chaser, which they needed for their collection. This I an amazing act of kindness which needs to be shared to all!

The Vinylmation is currently being sold for $4.46, which is extremely cheap for one Vinylmation. Although the Vinyl does come from the United Kingdom and may result in costly shipping fees. The seller has 100% positive feedback and like I said, ships from the United Kingdom, therefore a very minor chance of any trouble.

Marvel Series One: Black Widow- $8.99

Black Widow from Marvel series one is currently being sold by “Disney_Pins_And_Vinyls” on ebay.
