Earlier today, Disney Infinity and Marvel teamed up at an event at the Pacific Theatres’ Cinerama Dome to officially announce the newest chapter to the Disney Infinity franchise. A couple of weeks ago, we were teased with a video showing Captain America’s shield. However, today we got more information of what we can expect to see later this year. Accompanied on stage by Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D star Clark Gregg (Agent Phil Coulson), Disney Interactive President Jimmy Pitaro and Marvel CCO Joe Quesada introduced Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes, the first part of Disney Infinity 2.0.
~ A Brand New Game
Yes, Marvel Super Heroes is a new game. In addition to being supported on the WiiU, XBox 360, PS3, PC, and ioS like the first Disney Infinity game was, Marvel Super Heroes will be released on XBox One and PS4. At this time, it does not look like the new game will be released on Wii or Nintendo DS. Also, there is no word that there will be a “Base Owner’s Pack” sold.
~ Forward Compatibility
The figures, the Power Discs, the Toy Box items, and the Infinity Base are all forward compatible with Marvel Super Heroes/ Disney Infinity 2.0.
~ New Characters and Play Sets
In addition to being able to use all of the 29 characters from the previous game (and their Infinite Crystal counterparts), Disney Infinity 2.0 will bring to life more of your favorite Disney and Marvel characters, as well as new Play Sets. Today focused on the Starter Pack and the Avengers Play Set, but an intro video also showed characters from the Spider-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy franchises. At later dates, they will announce more characters, including a total of 20 Marvel characters.
~ The Starter Pack
The Starter Pack will contain the Avengers Play Set, two Toy Box Game Discs, and three figures:
Iron Man, Black Widow, and Thor
The Avengers Play Set is a MASSIVE Play Set. It is four times bigger than The Incredibles Play Set from the original Disney Infinity, and it’s a recreation of Marvel Manhattan.
The two Toy Box Game Discs (one set in Asgard) are 4-6 hour adventures set within the Toy Box. Unlike the Play Sets, once completed by an Avengers characters, the adventure opens up into skirmish mode, so any Disney Infinity character can play it.
In addition, we saw images of figures for Hawkeye, Captain America, and the Hulk.
~ New Power Discs
Eighty (80) new power Discs will be released in two waves. Included in these discs are new abilities, such as Team Up, where you can summon characters such as Iron Patriot to come fight by your side, and Costume Changes, which will bring a different look to your character. There will also be plenty of new vehicles, including the Mini Helicarrier, motorcycles, and Lola, which converts from a car to a hovercraft.
~ Character Upgrades
Listening to the community, Disney Infinity have made significant strides in character enhancements for 2.0. In addition to adding abilities such as Hover, Forward Flight, Super Jump, and Wall Crawl to some of their characters, they have also developed Combat Classes for the upcoming characters. This makes certain characters better at melee combat, and others better at ranged combat. The Hulk’s “Rage Mode” is by far the most powerful attack in the game.
In addition, each character will now have an attribute and skill tree, where the player can choose how to upgrade their character’s attacks and special abilities. Also, each character’s maximum level will be raised to 20.
~ Toy Box Upgrades
There are numerous upgrades coming to the Toy Box, including:
– The Brush System: Where you choose the area and the Toy Box builds it for you. The examples that were given were a NYC street scene and a racetrack.
– Builders: Townspeople you can place inside the Toy Box that will build things for you.
– Interiors: You can now build a door into the side of an object in the Toy Box that will take you to ‘interiors’, where you can build INSIDE of the object. There is also a “Home” element, where you can unlock upgrades and.
– Logic Toys will be upgraded and easier to use, giving everyone an easier chance to become a Toy Box Artist, as well as making the games feel and look more complete (gone are the days of the fireworks cannon). Included in these upgrades are templates, where you can enter an entire rules set into you Toy Box, and that come pre-programmed for a certain objective.
