Across the Pond – D23 Expo

NewFeatureImage-500x290 d23Phew, what a weekend and I was thousands of miles away on the other side of the planet, just living through everyones Twitter, Facebook and Instagram feeds, things have certainly become so much easier to keep up to date with social media.  And the amount of coverage we were able to get up on Vinylmation Kingdom while not even being at the event is purely down to the fantastic people in attendance sharing their photos with us collectors.

Anyway, the D23 Expo has been a interesting event to be following and I can’t wait to do the same with the Villains event next month, I might not be able to be there in person, but I can still feel part of the experience through other people, while still at work and on my breaks!

D23 seemed like a great event in terms of the amount of Vinylmation available to purchase, there was so many fantastic sets and figures out that have really put the Comic Con and some might argue even the 13 Villains event, to shame.  Disney went all out at this years event to milk every collectors pockets empty and to come back for more.

D23 looked to be a lot of fun, I’ve enjoyed catching up with the previews on the new Infinity video game plus the fab Disney Songbook presentation featuring lots of classic tunes.  There looked to be so much going on and I have to say I’m very jealous of those in attendance who got to experience all those things, though it did look like most people needed a day at the show just to secure all their items, which would allow the other days to enjoy the presentations.

For many in attendance, the hours waiting in line and time spent outside the venue plus all the expenses of being at the show are sometimes forgotten, and many collectors are selling on the extras they picked up to cover some of these costs, which I think is perfectly fair.  I didn’t spend all night waiting to get in, I didn’t have to spend hours in line to buy a product, so expecting to pay retail plus shipping for a item from someone just isn’t right.  They put the time and effort into getting those items, I stayed at home and went to work, so I shouldn’t begrudge people putting a little extra on some items to cover this.  If you don’t want to pay a little more for a figure from D23, then you maybe haven’t fully understood what was going on at the event and haven’t remembered, they are doing you a favour, not the other way around.  But then this applies to other events like SDCC, Villains or even those lucky enough to be local to the parks.  But that’s maybe just my view on this.

The event looks to be a massive success and the Vinylmations available seem to have gone down well, there was a wide selection of different characters with some more popular than others.  It was very interesting how the Sorcerer Logo figure seemed to be extremely popular with the addition of the variant and I wonder if this might effect the upcoming Food and Wine Epcot figure which is using a similar method by having blind variants.  It’s certainly a much more attractive way of getting people interested in the open window versions and I think we are going to see much more of this in the future.
There has been some grumblings from collectors who are heading to the 13 Villains event next month who felt the D23 Expo had so many fantastic figures while the line up for the Vinylmation event of the year, is a bit less impressive.  I think once the dust has settled on D23, we will start seeing a few more things for the 13 event but for me, that weekend is just as crazy as the D23 Expo.  Once again living through those at the event to see what’s new and exciting.

Once again, I just want to thank everyone who was posting images and videos from the D23 Expo, because this event didn’t feel thousands of miles away, I might not have been there but I still got to experience some of the magic from a far.
