Dollars and Sense: News Brief–Older 9″ Vinyls Running Hot

Wanted to introduce a “newish” column.  Big thank you to the many great readers of Dollars and Sense over the past 14 months and all your words of encouragement.  For the time being, I wanted to tweak the Dollars and Sense column and present to you the financial highlights as they happen.  I’ll provide a bit of commentary, but mostly I want to hear from you.

Older 9″ Vinylmations Are Running Hot!

1. Shag—LE 150–$875

2. Cruise Line Mickey–Park 1–LE 300–$600

3. Robot–Urban 1–LE 400–$575 (Three sales in past month)

4. Mine–Park 2–LE 550–$575

5.  Mortimer–Urban 1–LE 400–2 sold recently for average $535 (1 month ago sold for $132)

Also of note is that the Urban 1 Dragon and Mummy also had sales north of $500. The Dragon actually sold for $232 on May 19 and then $550 on May 23.

Remember, all it takes is one or two collectors with deep pockets to really throw the marketplace on it’s mickey ears.  I do suspect these will all drop in price again, but one thing is for certain, they are not getting less rare.

This is a different Mummy than the combo from Urban 7. It is just a 9″ and has a single eye. Edition size is 200 and from urban 1.

now i regret not picking up those mortimer mouse 9″s even more!

  4. The cuteness factor always comes into play for sure. Seeming lower for the most part edition size also helps. Disney has the ability to pick schemes for the 9′s that just dont say “I have to have that”
Like the “UP” 9, that was gone super fast. I like to use Toy story as an example, Zurg for the 9″ REALLY! The only one worse would have been BIG BABY! I love the Blue flame one that I would pay a bit more for that comes to mind. I have seen the DCL 9′s vary wildly for hard to figure why, although the about one has the cuteness factor.

You mentioned about one or two collectors with deep pockets… I could probably name one of them! Without naming names, there is one particular Disneyana collector who has an EXTENSIVE collection of other Disney collections and just recently started collecting vinylmation. The individual is a completist so I wouldn’t doubt if they are the reason for these prices…

With an auction, it only takes 2 to tango and with a Buy It Now….well it only takes 1. It’s amazing how just a few people can really change the landscape of rare collectibles for a period of time.
