An Urban 7 vinylmation, a phone number, coordinates, the letter Z, pictures, hints, fancy letters and shadows. What do all of these have in common? They all were an intregral part of Project Z. For those of you who do not know, Project Z was Disney’s way of enticing…errrr….teasing us with a new vinylmation concept product. Did it work? Initial signs point to yes.
It all started with this number. 407-390-5584 which could be found on the Urban 7 telephone. Many of us called the number and were given a seemingly random set of numbers. I was not that lucky. I called the day the Urban 7 was released and got a voice mail. Thinking that I called the wrong number, I called again. Same message. Same voice mail. No fancy hints for Xero.
Some pretty smart people, smarter than me I must say, figured that this number was a map coordinate. Thanks to Google Earth, which is a pretty amazing thing itself, we found out that those first coordinates pointed to Walt Disney World, Magic Kingdom, Frontierland, Country Bears Jamboree. Then more numbers popped up.
Hong Kong Disneyland, Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, Walt Disney World, Future World, Epcot, Mission: Space, Walt Disney World, Blizzard Beach
The pattern seemed clear. What ever this was, it was Park focused. Well that was until these coordinates put a wrench into things…………….
40.749582, -73.848381 This seems to be right outside of Arthur Ashe Tennis Stadium and not inside a WDW Park. Ahhh, but later we would discover that this spot was site of the 1964 World’s Fair where Walt debuted It’s a Small World, Progressland (aka Carousel of Progress), Ford Magic Skyway (which later became PeopleMover), and Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln. More information from really smart people.
Our theory was still on track. And thanks to pictures like this
Our theory had a name. Prozect Z. What it was, still a mystery.
Then we were teased with Park Specific Pictures that match to coordinates. Like these…..
Looking closely at these, we found all sorts of hints at what was to come, although we really did not know what this Project Z was. We all were thinking outside the mold and hoping for something really cool.
Well, did we get something really cool? Yes, yes we did. Although I will have to say it was very easy for me to pick 3 that I did not like. And at $20 apiece very easy for me not to buy these particular 3. This is going to be a very interesting series. Unlike vinylmation the figure is more than the art. My gut feeling is that there will be more disagreement about my Zeros and Heros here than in any other.
So let the discussion begin.
POTC Skeleton Pirate
Nothing wrong with this guy. Nothing wrong with Pirates of the Caribbean. Nothing wrong with a POTC figure being in this set. But do we really need another random nonspecific vinyl Pirate. Let me look around my collection. I see Park 5 POTC Pirate. Tokyo Pirate Mickey and I believe that there is actually an entire vinylmation series dedicated to Pirates that include 3 of these henchman dudes. Although for some odd reason I do not see any of that set in my collection. Weird huh? I wonder why that is. Anyways. Pirates are cool. The ride is classic, but there had to be a better character to put in this set, One that we have not see yet in the vinyl world. Let me think if I can come up with one.
Ouch, sorry. If one of the 50 stars on my flag that I fly outside my house just fell off than I apologize. Abe Lincoln is fine. I mean Abe Lincoln is great. One of the greatest ever. But the fact that we get an Abe Lincoln figure with no hat is rather odd to me. Rather odd indeed. I love that he has the Gettysburg Address in his right hand. That is awesome, But he needs the hat.
Edit: Did a quick Google check and discovered that Mr Lincoln actually gave his address without his hat. Well I guess that I should have paid attention better in History class or at least looked at the pictures. So I suppose that this should move Mr Lincoln off my Zeros list. But I can not. Looking at all of the other figures I see that every single one of them is a made up fictional character, and, other than the Squid, are Disney characters. So for that reason, he remains a zero. Sorry.
Speaking of the Squid
20,000 Leagues Squid
Jules Verne would not be happy with me. Not sure how Captain Nemo would feel about this list. But I know that the crew member that was devoured by this squid as it attacked the Nautilis would agree. The world is a better place without giant submarine attacking, man eating squids. That being said, I loved the ride at WDW, and was very said to see it taken out. I think about it everytime I am at the Magic Kingdom. There was just something special about hoping aboard the Nautilis. That ride took you to another place in time. So all in all. love the ride, love that the ride has a place in this set. Just not sold on the Squid. Sorry
So here’s where things get sketchy.
At first I was like, Awesome, it’s Figment. Then I was like, Ummm, he’s a bowling pin. Then I was like, I like Figment. I like bowling. Why not merge the 2. Although a trip to the bowling alley is not as cheap as I remembered when I was a kid. A buck a game. That’s what I remember. Not sure it is such a deal any more. Try taking your whole family. I like the idea of a Disney/Bowling merge. I hear that Disney’s West Side is getting a Bowling Alley. It will replace Ridemakerz, which replaced the Princess Di dress exhibit, which replaced Virgin records. Did I miss anything? I wonder if their bowling pins will have Disney theming? How great would that be to bowl the Figment lane, or the Goofy Lane. 24 Lanes. 24 different Disney character bowling pins. Imagine the possibilities. Imagine the marketing. Imagine the merchandising. Maybe some blind box bowling pin figures. Would you buy some. I would. Just not at $20 each
From the happy and fun that is Figment to dark and mysterious. This Yeti rocks. The Yeti, at this point is the face of Disney’s Animal Kingdom and ……………HALT…………When I said dark and mysterious I was not talking about the Yeti.
I was talking about….
Yep Big Al is Hero #2. The Yeti is cool and all, but he is everywhere. Think about it, how much Big Al stuff is out there. The Yeti has an enitre store full of his stuff. Big Al, not so much. I do not think that I have to sing the merits of this figure. I will just leave you all with this
blood on the saddle,
and blood all around.
And a great, big puddle
of blood on the ground
I do have a request to the VM team with this this one. And for ther record this is my first offical VK request. Thomas Scott if you are reading this, please take note
Xero’s First Official Request : Please, oh please place a different Country Bear in each new Park Starz set, so we can eventually have the whole line up.
Thank You, signed Xero
Wow this is a tough one. Horizon’s Butler, Ice Gator, Small World, Haunted Mansion Bride. All super designs. The Ice Gator and Small World are sure to be in my collection. But I wanted to go outside the box with this pick and commend the team for adding what I feel is a very unique design from a classic Disney Attraction. No, not the Mac Tonight guy………………Hero #3 is………………………
I love this one and am hoping that I can snag this one off eBay for cheaper than retail. I have a feeling that I am in the minority here, so he may sell for chirp. I mean cheap. But just look at Jose. His expression is EXACTLY as it should be. Whomever the artist is, I commend you. Job very well done. Jose looks as he is about to speak. And this macaw loves to talk. So speak Jose. Tell us all about it. Love the hoop. Love the feet. Love the beak. Love the eyes. Love the shape. Love the look. All in all a must have for me. And the fact that Jose and his 3 cohosts Pierre, Michael and Fritz are back spouting one liners, this addition to the Park Starz line up is welcomed and well deserved
Anyway we could get figures of Pierre, Michael and Fritz down the road? (Xero’s Official Request #2)
So that’s it. That’s my review. I would have to say the Park Starz is a very well thought out set that most vinyl collectors will enjoy. Still not sold on the $20 price tag on a blind tin that has no chance of producing a ‘rare’ figure. But these are fun none-the-less. So next time you are at the Parks, pick one up and see who you were lucky enough to get. And remember, if you are addicted enough, you could just buy the entire case and ensure yourself an entire set. Me, I will pick and choose my designs and add them one by one whether through eBay or our wonderful VK trading section located in our Forums.
Either way, however you chose, make sure to add some of these wonderful creations to your vinyl collection.
