VK Who Dat?
Welcome to the first ever VK Who Dat? What’s that you say? Nope, not What’s that. Who Dat. When is that Who Dat done? Right here. Right now. That’s when. Who Dat is next. Where Dat Who Dat? This is where. That’s where. But why a Who Dat? Why not a Who Dat? That’s why I do a Who Dat. How do you do that Who Dat? This is how I do a Who Dat. This is how a Who Dat is done. Take a series and compare it to some random aspect of Pop Culture. Dat’s how. No. I did not say Pop Vinyls. Pop Culture is what we are talking about today. Although I do really love those Pop Vinyls. Gotta get me a Stitch.
Who Dat, What’s Dat, Where Dat, When Dat, Why Dat, How Dat.
That’s Dat. Got that?
Now go back again and read that intro out loud.
For the inaugural edition of Who Dat? we will look at the DCL Character series. This is a set of seven that can only be obtained by cruising with Disney. So do not expect to see any of these for sale on land. You must be seafarin’ to get your grimies on these.
To make this a bit more fun, I will not only compare a like vinyl to its like Pop Culture character, but also decide which one has the edge over the other. Meaning which I think is more important in the grand scheme of things. (According to Xero that is LOL)
Let’s take a look at this series as a whole then we will break it down.
We have all the major players. Mickey. Minnie. Goofy. Donald. Chip. Dale. We even get a bonus Disney Dream AquaDuck Donald.
So what does this Cruise ship crew remind us of? What part of 80′s Pop culture could these be compared to?
Well, I will give you a hint
No that is not the Dream. Or the Magic. Or the Wonder. This is perhaps one of the most famous cruise ships of all time. Any ideas?
Nope not the Titanic. This Cruise Ship stayed afloat for many a cruise. Infact from 1977–1986 it virtually never missed a week.
Do you recognize any of these people?
Just in case you haven’t figured it out because either you were not born yet, you do not have the full TV length run on DVD or just plain do not care. This is…….
Yep the Love boat. And this picture brings us to our first comparison

Good ole’ Aquaduck. Both The Love Boat cast and Donald are enjoying being squeezed into an innertube. As far as comparing the two.
Edge here goes to AquaDuck. This water ride looks awesome. Even though The Love Boat sailed for all those years, I would take a slide down the AquaDuck any time over a episode of the Love Boat. now if it was Chips, then I would have to think about it
Shall we go on? Lets look at our first character comparison
Captain Merrill Stubing
Captain Mickey. Gotta love the Captains. Gotta love the hats. When is the Captains reception and what ever will I wear?
Edge here : Mickey. I think that I would be kicked off this site if I did not go with the Mouse that started it all.. And it was really not that close of a vote. Not close at all.
Vicki Stubing, the captain’s daughter

Since our good Captain never really had a love interest (although looking again at the cast picture above, one could debate that)., we will go with a different kind of love. Not eros, but agape. And Vicki also has the cuteness factor that Minnie is adorned with.
Edge here: Minnie. Not sure if Vicki ever really had a function. And Minnie looks so cute in that bow. I do not think that any would disagree with me here. I am not sure there are many die hard Vicki Stubing fans out there. Well except for maybe her Mom, Husband, Kids and Pets. If any of you read my stuff I apologize. Give the dog a bone for me.
Love, exciting and new
Come Aboard. We’re expecting you…….
Julie McCoy, “Your Cruise Director”
Chip here along with Dale below offer a great sidekick component to this set. As were Julie and Gopher for the Love Boat.
Edge: Julie – This one was almost a tossup. I can see both Chip and The Cruise director scurring about the boat. One looking for nuts and the other looking for fun. But those Baby Blues put Julie over the edge.
Love, life’s sweetest reward.
Let it flow, it floats back to you……..
Burl “Gopher” Smith, “Your Yeoman Purser”
Yep “Gopher” just is beggin’ for a comparison to one of the Chipmunks. I mean come on.
Edge. Gopher. Sorry Dale, but by name alone Gopher has you. He is both human and varmit. Kind of pesty and a nuisance, but then again so are chipmunks.
Love Boat soon will be making another run
The Love Boat promises something for everyone………
Dr. Adam “Doc” Bricker, “Your Ship’s Doctor”
Not sure what kind of a doctor Donald would make, but I am sure that just like Doc Bricker, he would never lose his cool. Now where o where did Dr Donald leave that scalpel?
Edge: Doc Brinker. I just do not think that I would trust my care to Donald. Physicians with tempers. That will never end well. Remember this quote ? “I am board certified in cardio-thoracic medicine and trauma surgery, ….. You ask me if I have a God complex. Let me tell you something: I am God. …” How did that turn out? Not sure that I can see Doc Brinker saying this. Donald – not so sure. He can get pretty punchy. Picture this, you walk into his office and ask for a second opinion Donald gets all red in the face and says to you ” You want to go see Mickey. Fine. Go see Mickey for your problems. But remember, Donald will always be number 1″ Then storms out of the room with his tail feathers all ruffled
Set a course for adventure,
Your mind on a new romance……….
Isaac Washington, “Your Bartender”
Isaac was never short on oneliners and was always ready to provide a spark of humor to any situation. What else should you expect from a ship’s bartender, but to lighten the mood. Just like Goofy. I wonder what kind of drinks Goofy would mix up? I do not think that I ever saw the Goofy cartoon “How to Tend Bar”. What Have a Laugh volume is that one on?
Edge. Tossup. This one is just to close to call. I would lean towards Isaac, but the fact that Goofy was my favorite Disney character evens the playing field.
Love won’t hurt anymore
It’s an open smile on a friendly shore.
It’s LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE! It’s LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE! It’s
LOOOOOOOOOOOVE!
It’s the Love Boat-ah! It’s the Love Boat-ah!
Final Tally
DIsney – 3
Love Boat - 3
Tossup – 1
So it looks like this one is a dead even tie. Proving just how great The Love Boat truly was. I wonder how Threes Company would compare to this set. Better yet Cutesters Too.
So that’s it for my little comparison. The Love Boat always ended on a happy note. so I hope that you are happy with my little trip back in time. But do not turn off the TV, because there is no DVR where we are going. As a matter of fact there aren’t even remotes. So don’t touch that dial.

Da Plane! Da Plane!
Have a Magical Day

Totally right about Isaac and Goofy; total stalemate. They should make a buddy-cop flick together.
Well lol I had to skip the first paragraph because so many dats reminded me of the crappy New Orleans Saints haha but after that I love it all.
I was scrolling to the end before I read the article, because I was going to take away your ATL card if you’d written that many Who Dat’s. Now, back to read the article!
Ha. I never even thought about the Saints.
How bout them Cowboys !!!!!
You can never have too many Who Dats in an article! Go Saints! Who Dat!!
Great article can’t wait to see what you have in store for the next one.
taking a Disney cruise next month..it’ll be interesting to see which side of me wins the battle..its our love of Disney Cruise Line vs. my Hate for the new mold..lol
I don’t think I caught the point of this article. Were you making fun of the series?
I’m sure Xero will speak for himself, but I think he was just having fun with the little guys in a non-sensical, enjoyable way. I am pulling for A-team and Dukes of Hazard soon.
Lacking intelligible meaning: a nonsensical jumble of words.
Foolish; absurd: nonsensical ideas.
I looked up nonsensical and I that is what I found. Harsh critique. I prefer to call this article whimsicle.
To answer your question JKO, I just wrote this one for fun and it really has no meaning. It really wasn’t meant to. I had a blast writing it. I am sorry that you did not enjoy. And I hope that I did not offend any one.
A Team huh? We will have to wait and see
Whimsical per Webster….subject to erratic behavior or unpredictable change
Don’t forget the other word I described it as….enjoyable.
But since it’s your birthday. I’ll let it slide.
Had a blast reading it.
