Project Z: Think Outside the Mold…. NEW THEORY

The Vinylmation team has this image  up on their Project Z page when you click the file folder.

But what does it mean? Well let’s go with what we know. Well it’s created by Thomas Scott and Casey Jones. The figures will still be 3″. We have 11 coordinates that suggests a series.

Now let’s speculate. Oviously the sticky note saying “Think Outside the Mould This Time” in correlation with the scribble over the “new Mickey” mold lets me believe we’re getting a new series that is not on the mold Now does the spelling of “mould” on the sticky note mean anything or is it just a choice? The spelling of “mould” is a British spelling. Dunno if that’s significant.  The sticky note is also signed by “Z”. Are we getting a series that each figure is on a different mold  or are we just getting a different type of mold altogether. Who knows at this point but I’m definitely intrigued. More info later.

I think this has to do with the Duffy vinylmation that was mentioned way back. I remember we even saw the box for this too. I think it has to do with Duffy being part of the disney parks around the world so each coordinate goes with a ride from different parks and each design will be on the new Duffy “mould” I am just hoping the Duffy mold doesn’t remind me of the old mold with added features like eyes, nose, etc.

  2. I don’t think it’s Duffy since we’ve seen him. He’s also just going to be an open box series that I believe will just be Duffy’s in different outfits. (the last part is my opinion on it)

I wonder if the Orange bird at the bottom right hand side has anything to do with Project Z… The bird seems to symbolize The Florida Project (as when you click on the bird it takes you to the Florida Project page). Could we see more information and possible figures at The Florida Project?

I am not seeing the Orange Bird anywhere on my computer??
    .
My favorite part is the scribble over the NEW mold. I am trying to think…..was Mickey Mouse ever portrayed in a British fashion other than a Detective (Sherlock Holmes) type character? I could go for that. Anything other than the NEW mold HAS to be a better Mickey collectible!

Duffy from different locales in appropriate attire is my guess.

  7. It’s not Duffy. I’m just saying. haha

You have some inside information? LOL.

      Alright Baltar,

Spill the beans, you know something!!!

      • haha I have had zero conversation with anybody who said “Hey Project Z is…” I have had a few conversations about Duffy. Honestly, Duffy’s sales are not what they hoped. Who is shocked by that really? Nobody but Disney’s dumb marketing people thought Duffy would explode here like it is in Japan.

I see the Duffy series being like the Duffy stuffed bears. Bear with different World Showcase outfits on or other outfits. It’s not a mystery series.

posted this on the thread but I’ll post it here as well.

Looking back at the old Duffy articles they mentioned a new 3D printing technique to make the Vinyls and when you google that, Z Corporation 3D printing comes up. coincidence? So project Z could be the 3D duffy Vinyl printing? Am I too far out there on this? What do you think? Disney is listed as a customer of Z corporation.

    • artisticdoodle on said:

Isn’t that funny? Though what bothers me is that “Disneyland Resort” is listed (and not Disney Parks and Resorts). Yes yes, trivial, but why not use that listing.

Also looked on wiki for an article of them and this little tid bit popped up:

“Unique among rapid prototyping technologies, Z Corp printers can print parts in full color, by varying the color of the binding liquid applied by the printing head at any location. [6]. Color can be used to simulate the appearance of other materials (as in architectural models or product prototypes Building DesignExperience Building OnlineCivil Engineering News), to highlight surface structures or add annotations to models (as in models used to plan surgeries The Journal of Cranialfacial Surgery), or to display the results of structural analyses (such as finite element analysis) directly on the model surface.

Recently, Z Corp. printers have been used to manufacture custom avatars and figurines from video games such as World of Warcraft in full color Boston Globe, Wall Street Journal.”

So, will we see even better paint jobs, more detailed designs, layered pieces like “fur”, and accessories (har har think outside the mold)? Heck, maybe we can even get our own customs made!

I don’t think you are too far out at all! I first found out about this type of printing though the company I work for. I’ve seen 3D printing in person, but it didn’t print in color. It’s pretty amazing!! I never made the connection to 3D printing vinyls… but then seeing “Think outside of the mould” … This would totally fit that hint, since it doesn’t use a mold. There is an article that pops up if you search Disney on Z corporations website that lists Disney imagineering as a customer, so Disney definately knows about this technology. Is this the same thing you found? Since they have had problems printing on molds in the past, maybe this is a new option? Maybe it’s a totally new way to design customs? Maybe they will reveal a set by printing them out before your eyes!! I hope you’re right…. This could be very cool!

  9. When Disney started to look for land in FL for WDW they wanted to keep it a secret, so they named it project X…..There has been no Y that I could find, so the 2 probably aren’t related…… Disney may really like letters :)

  10. Brad B on said:

After watching the Z Corp video, I can totally see Disney being able to make Vinylmations with this process. Product costs were not mentioned, but I could see this being the secret Project Z.

  11. Brad B on said:

Ooooo, a diorama would be COOL! You could order a certain Disney ride, movie scene, etc. to display your vinyls on.
    .
Another idea is you could order a custom vinylmation on the spot. Say you wanted a Haunted Mansion Mickey vinyl….viola….it’s created with the Z-machine printer!

  12. Has anyone seen the letter hidden in each coordinate photo and tried to unscramble them for a solution?

  13. Hmm… interesting.

  14. I saw the letters. There is an “r” in country Bears, an “a” in It’s a Small World, a “k” in Haunted Mansion, but I couldn’t see anything in Pirates.

  15. If you look at the key in pirates it looks loke a d.

  16. Thanks, Steve. I did look at that key yesterday and thought it was weird but hadn’t made the connection to the D. So that’s very interesting.

So the coordinates are in a particular order. That means we have these blanks.

    _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

    R A K _ _ D _ _ _ _ _

Now I’m not saying this will form a word. It might, or the letters might unscramble to form a word.

OR, the letters can just be a hint to what each scene/coordinate will represent from that pic.

I’m excited to get more info.

  17. zsmallwood on said:

What if the letters were placed in order of the release of the picture? And possibly the ‘u’ in mould. Just a thought. I don’t know which pics were released in what order. Lol.

  18. Alo0s if you look next to the letter in the pirates photo it almost looks like a footprint , line maybe from a new mold?

  19. Sorry the footprint is next to the k in the haunted mansion photo.

  20. There is a 5th photo up now. Everest!

  21. Travis on said:

Where is the link to these photos?

  22. AdventureBlueDude on said:

If the footprint is only in the HM picture, could it mean that HM will be the first series to feature this supposed new mold?

In terms of the Everest picture, I can’t see anything

  23. experiment626 on said:

I take that back. I found a letter on the lower left corner. Is it an E?

  24. solo.dancer on said:

i couldnt see any letters in everest, but i did notice on the banner thing what looked like either a compass or a sparkle thing :D

  25. Brad B on said:

I saw the Z on the right hand side of the photo about a 1/3 of the way up. It’s real hard to see because there is not a lot of contrast in the brown.

  26. Got em. I still think the POTC is supposed to be a d as apposed to an A. Now what do we think that is in the HM pic? Feet? Mickey buttons?

  27. underdog on said:

why do i feel like i’m watching an episode of LOST ? (new mold lovers are “the others”.lol)

  28. There are more letters in the Everest it seems than just one.

  29. AdventureBlueDude on said:

I heard about a second letter in the everest picture. I wasn’t sure though. It kinda looked like it was just a carving in the wood. In terms of the feet in the HM picture, I personally think that we may be seeing new feet introduced(since they’re removable with the new mold) and that HM may be the first set to use them. I dunno though

  30. AdventureBlueDude on said:

In terms of the letter in pirates, I’m not sure what it is. It just looks like an ‘a’ to me because it doesn’t seem tall enough to be a d. It could just be the font though

  31. Travis on said:

    OK….
Haunted Mansion- That shadow on the lower left next to the chair is out of place.

Everest- The shadow is NOT a profile of a bear, but actually a lot bigger. The tip of the shadow is at the bottom of the beware sign and looks like…. well, the shadow of something with arms. It’s a pretty big shadow.

Small World- The shadow looking like an eskimo kid on the bottom left seems out of place.

Country Bears- The shadow looking like Big Al on the right part of the background seems out of place.

  32. Click the “Project Z” button on our menu up above for the newest information.

  33. My theory is that it eventually is a set kinda like Pop Vinyls but for the parks…

  34. LOL, It came to me in a dream last night. Thinking outside the mould could = a new size? Is that possible or probable?

  35. They probably arent doing this, but what if the are like switching it maybe. For example lion king, they could have it in the shape of a lion king character but painted on as mickey. That would be awesome!
