Dollars and Sense #11–Sealed Tray Price Guide

Dollars and Sense #11–Sealed Tray Price Guide

To blind-box or not to blind-box, that is the question…

Blind-boxing was the “hook” that got our family into  Vinylmations back in 2010.  Though fun, it is not a very efficient way to collect a complete series, especially if one lives over 1000 miles away from D-street.  So on occasions, we have resorted to buying a whole tray of vinyls to guarantee our spoils.

The first tray we purchased was Muppets 1 back in March of last year.  We had just gotten back from WDW drunk with vinyl love, but were disappointed to have missed the release of Muppets 1 by a few days. Immediately after seeing them for sale on disneystore.com, we plunked down almost $260 ($9.95*24+Tax) and were so excited to have the opportunity to still collect a whole series from so far away.  It wasn’t until about a month later that I realized another option was out there for buying sealed trays and the prices were more palatable…

For this weeks Dollars and Sense, we wanted to present a price guide for sealed trays off of eBay.  Our hope is that this will allow your hard earned dollars to go a little bit farther.  The prices are from completed listings on eBay from 6/18-7/2 and include shipping to you door.

As you can see, there are lot of series that can be had for less than retail.   One complicating factor is that different series have different prices, so I went ahead and created Value Rankings based on their percent discount off retail for those under $240.     For the store price, I used retail NOT including tax.  This is to take into account the fact many fans have annual pass discounts that knock down the price a bi and to make the numbers look nice.

Value Rankings

  1. Urban 5 ($225/310)–37.4% Savings
  2. Muppets 2 ($210/286)–37%
  3. Clears ($185/240)–23%
  4. Have A Laugh ($190/240)–21%
  5. Cutesters Too ($200/240)–17%
  6. Villians ($200/240)–17% (only one sold–estimate future sale prices to be higher)
  7. Urban 6 ($240/286)–16%
  8. Holiday 2 ($205/240)–15%
  9. Animation ($210/240)–12%
  10. Toy Story ($210/240)–12%
  11. Park 6 ($295/310)–5%
  12. Cutesters ($230/240)–4%

Lessons Learned

  1. eBay is cheaper than ds.com when looking at cases available online.  In my instances, the savings even out-weigh the price savings at D-Street with an annual pass discount.
  2. Right after a release, the demand is high for a tray, but as soon as a series has been out for a couple months it starts to drop as people move onto newer releases.  Case in point…Muppets 2.
  3. Since starting to collect about 15 months ago, every series has been less than retail on eBay at some point.  Cases of Park 4 were as low as $170.  Park 5, even with the hefty $310 price tag were as low as $165.
  4. Be PATIENT and avoid paying retail for cases, there are lots of options out there.
